Homework is set to:
- provide an opportunity to consolidate learning from the classroom.
- provide an opportunity to practise skills.
- provide an opportunity to demonstrate understanding.
- prepare in advance for a subject or aspect of learning.
- revise a certain piece or area of work in preparation for a test or exam.
- encourage independent learning skills.
- encourage development of effective time management.
Homework must:
- be manageable for students and staff.
- be meaningful for progress in learning.
- be appropriately challenging for students’ age and stage.
- students should be given a minimum of 48 hours to complete homework.
Homework Frequency
Key Stage 3
Years 7 & 8
30 minutes of homework per subject per fortnight.
In addition, students should spend at least 60 minutes reading each week (students should read their accelerated reading book).
Year 9
45 minutes of homework per subject per fortnight
In addition, students are encouraged to read independently at home for at least 60 minutes each week.
Key Stage 4
All homework tasks should take approximately 60 minutes.
English and Maths should set one homework task per week.
Biology, Chemistry and Physics should set one homework task per fortnight.
All option subjects should set one homework task per fortnight.
Key stage 5
Students should complete at least 4 hours of work outside of lessons per subject per week i.e. at least 12 hours in total.
This is to be completed during study periods or as homework. The average student has 15 study periods per week.
Bromcom
Homework assignments will be recorded as an assignment on Bromcom, which both students and parent can see in the MCAS app.
Homework could be, but isn’t limited to:
- Online learning on GCSEPod, Educake, Sparx, or similar.
- A written homework, such research or past paper questions.
- Revision and practice
Students can complete their homework at break and lunchtimes in the LRC, if they wish.
The Learning Support department run a homework club in the LRC to support students in the completion of homework. This is after school and runs until 3.45pm.
Students should seek additional timely support from class teachers if they require additional support with any homework.
Reviewing Homework
Where appropriate, time should be provided in lessons to review homework through peer/self-assessment.
Rewards and Sanctions
Whole school rewards systems should be used by subject teachers to reward exceptional performance in homework.
Whole school sanctions should be used by subject teachers where expectations regarding homework are not met by a student.
